Indonesia and Saudi Arabia Ink Deal to Boost Intellectual Property Cooperation
11-Aug-2024 GENEVA - The Directorate General of Indonesian Intellectual Property (DGIP) and the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property (SAIP) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance cooperation in the field of intellectual property (IP). This agreement was made during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 65th general assembly of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland. Min Usihen, the director general of IP, who signed the agreement, stated that the main goal of this MoU was to establish a framework for collaboration between the two parties in the IP field, based on equality and mutual benefit. "This framework is expected to create beneficial synergies in the management and development of IP in Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, in accordance with the laws and regulations in each country," Min said. The MoU addresses several key points, including IP strategy, information technology development and the exchange of consultations and experiences in the latest technologies, including artificial intelligence for IP. Additionally, data exchange, IP information management, training and human resource development, and IP law and policy are also focal points of the cooperation, a press release by Jakarta Post.
Min further explained that the MoU also covered the promotion and awareness of the importance of IP, respect and enforcement of IP rights, and discussions on developing best practices in IP processes, including the Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH). This process will significantly impact the efficiency and speed of patent examination, resulting in faster patent grants for cross-border applicants. "Both parties agree to share feedback on the development of IP systems and the creation and utilization of IP networks. Other areas of cooperation that can be mutually agreed upon in writing will also be explored further," Min added. This event is expected to have a positive impact on IP policies for the governments of Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, as well as IP stakeholders in both countries. With this cooperation, both nations can learn from and benefit from each other's experiences in managing IP. The WIPO will also gain from increased international cooperation that can strengthen the global IP system. The Indonesian delegation involved in the event included the director general of IP, the special staff for foreign affairs of the law and human rights minister, the director of cooperation and education, the director of patents, integrated circuit layout design, and trade secrets, the director of IP information technology, the director of trademarks and geographical indications, the director of investigation and dispute resolution and representatives from the Foreign Ministry. With the signing of this MoU, it is hoped that the cooperation between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia in the field of IP will become closer, bringing significant benefits to both countries in developing and protecting their IP. This cooperation also demonstrates the commitment of both countries to continue innovating and adapting to technological and regulatory developments at the international level.
