The moment your work comes into existence, it gets copyright protection by default, in absence of copyright registration. However, it is always better if you register your copyright on any particular work you produced to get the benefit of assertion of your right legally, from the date of your creation, against the imitator. It is considered prima facie evidence in court in dispute of copyright ownership.

In practice, with regards to a text publicly available on a blog or a website, you may not use the text unless: such intended use is covered by the general license granted through that website; a copyright limitation or exception covers the use; or. you have obtained authorization for such use.

If you use others' work without knowing it was protected by copyright, they have the right to stop you from doing so and they might seek compensation.

When an image has copyright protection, no one else can use the image without the owner giving permission. With these rules in place, you need to assume that there is a copyright attached to any image you come across. Otherwise, you may face a court order, fines, or escalated legal action.

Both published and unpublished works can be registered. Although prior to 1978, copyright protection generally was available only for published works, such protection is now available for published as well as unpublished works. The process of registration and fee for the registration of copyright is the same.
