FAQ


A plant variety protection is a form of intellectual property right granted to the breeder of a new plant variety in relation to certain acts concerning the exploitation of the protected variety which require the prior authorization of the breeder. A plant variety shall be protected in Saudi Arabia if it is new, distinct, uniform, and stable, and procedures have been taken to designate a denomination for it.


The authorization of the breeder is required for the selling of seeds of a protected variety by any person.


Concerning the commercialization of the plant variety, it is necessary that the plant is protected in order to obtain the required authorization for importing and commercializing the same in Saudi Arabia.


Plant varieties are protected only by the Plant Breeders’ Rights system in Saudi Arabia.
