IP Charges Modified in Several Countries

19 Dec 2004

Abu-Ghazaleh Intellectual Property (AGIP) would like to advise its clients that several countries have recently modified charges related to different Intellectual Property services.
With respect to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) fees, the Council of Ministers issued resolution No. 30 of the year 2004, amending and introducing new official fees for trademark registration and renewal.
The ministerial resolution was published in the Official Gazette October 13, 2004 and will be effective as of January 1, 2005.
Effective December 18, 2004, government fees in Morocco have been increased as per the enactment of Law No. 17.97 on the Protection of Industrial Property.

Fees related to different IP services such as trademarks, patents, designs, copyright and plant varieties have been changed. As per the new Law, patent annuities from (2nd - 5th) must be paid at once. The rest of annuities are payable by periods of five years as follows: (6th -10th, 11th -15th, and 16th - 20th).

Charges in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia were also subject to change due to the issuance of new Patents, Layout Designs of Integrated Circuits, Plant Varieties and Industrial Designs Law. The new charges will be effective as of January 1, 2005.

The previous 1989 Saudi Patent Law stipulated that the same patent annuity fee shall be paid for 15 years. However, according to the new Law, progressive patent annuity must be paid each year over a period of 20 years.

As for Turkey, it is expected that the official fees will be subject to increase in January 2005. The newly modified official fees are expected to be published in the Official Gazette of Turkey next January.

Meanwhile, Oman is set to finalize new Trademark regulations. Accordingly, the official fees of trademarks will be subject to change also.

AGIP kindly requests its clients to check our website www.agip.com for the newly modified charges regarding Morocco. As for charges of Oman, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and UAE, clients can find the relevant modified and updated charges on AGIP website as of January 1, 2005.
