Significant Changes in the Patent Law

A new patent law was passed by the legislature on October 4, 2001. The new law, which is more compliant with the international practice, will take effect very soon after being signed by the President.

Among the amendments are the following:

1. The Oath and the Assignment are no longer prerequisite documents for securing an effective filing date.
2. An internal priority system is introduced.
3. The duration terms of all invention and utility model patents, which are still in force shall all, become 20 years and 15 years respectively, calculated from the filing date.
