New Classification Adopted

01 Oct 2001

The Saudi Arabian Government has issued the Ministerial Decision No. 1641 of 9/7/1422 AH (26/9/2001 AD), which stipulates amendment of the Implementing Regulations of its Trademark Law. Saudi Arabia has thus extended its classification of goods and services to 45 classes.

This decision was taken following a review by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) of the International Classification of Goods and Services (Nice Classification). WIPO decided to reclassify services into classes 42 to 45 with effect from January 1, 2002.

Accordingly, the classes 42 to 45 in Saudi Arabia will be as follows in a manner similar to the Nice Classification:

CLASS 42:
Scientific and technological services and research and design relating thereto; industrial analysis and research services; design and development of computer hardware and software; legal services.
CLASS 43:
Services for providing food and drink; temporary accommodation.
CLASS 44:
Medical services; veterinary services; hygienic and beauty care for human beings or animals; agriculture, horticulture and forestry services.
CLASS 45:
Personal and social services rendered by others to meet the needs of individuals; security services for the protection of property and individuals.
