Domain Names Registration

01 Dec 2002

Registration of domain names in Oman is governed by a special regulation that is interpreted according to Omani legislations and laws. The Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) is the local registry for the Top Level Domain Names (TLD) “.om”.

On the other hand, various sectors are umbrellaed by the second level domain name available under “.om”. Naturally, commercial institutions and companies registered at the Ministry of Commerce & Industry in Oman fall under “com.om” domain. Other alternatives are available for the business sector firms wishing to obtain their own domain names: “biz.om” and “co.om”. Analogously, Omantel allocates “org.om” for non-profit organizations that are registered at the Ministry of Social Affairs, Labour and Vocational Training. In “pro.om” lies the access given for professionals and professional associations to have domain names of their own.

Despite designating a general category, “gov.om”, for Omani governmental departments and ministries, the Ministry of Defense and its subsidiaries have “mod.om” as their second level domain name.

Being operative in a country where a huge portion of the population is youthful, as in most other Arab countries, Omantel sets two domain names for the educational institutions: “edu.om” and “ac.om”.

Registration of domain names is possible not only for basic activities such as health services like hospitals and clinics (med.om) but also for certain cultural facilities as museums, “museum.om”.

Definitely, Information technology has its share in registration through second level domain names in Oman. It is “net.om” under which entities that provide internet-related services such as ISPs, web hosting firms and portal sites can be registered.
